2026 CC 25th Anniversary Event in Jackson

Jackson, Mississippi that is.

Today a few of us had a call. You can find the 2nd part of the call on PeerTube. Unclear why, but the first part did not sync to PeerTube, but it is captured on YouTube.

At some point, I need to come back and write about 2025, but during the call Jason Smith reminded me that 2026 is the 25th anniversary of Creative Commons and I think it is worth getting people thinking about attending the event Friends of CC Music will be putting on then.

Another thing to think about will be the budget. It’s going to be expensive to throw a party like this and right now we have no means of collecting funds. We are thinking a festival stage worth of bands. Just so we have some numbers to work with let’s say we are going to have 9 bands over 11 hours. That’s the time and number of bands I used when I put on a festival a bit over two decades ago. Again, just for the sake of numbers, let’s say we pay the musicians a $1000 a set. This probably doesn’t make sense because sessions earlier in the day will be shorter, but again, we’re just trying to picture the scale. Between the bands and Ryno’s photographer/planner, we are already looking at over $10,000.

When I did my festival back in 2002, I was a student and just said “hey bands, we have this huge auditorium, you want to come and play?”. We didn’t pay anyone except the sound engineer. I’ve raised money before, but nothing anywhere close to this scale.

The preferred venue is Duling Hall. It will be expensive. We do have plenty of other, cheaper options when the time comes to make a decision, but I want folks to understand the scale of the event.

Ryno’s idea to bring in local bands will not only help us sell tickets to locals, but helps builds the CC Music catelog.

If you would like to get involved with helping this event, please join us at meet.jit.si/ccmusic on Sunday, October 13 at 2pm US Central (be aware that different countries change to winter time on different dates).
