Curation

Finding great music is awesome, but there’s a magic in the shared experience. In being part of a community of people who appreciate an artist or scene.

Podcasts

The Bugcast

In their own words: “…an award-winning podcast that has been gracing the podwaves since 2008 with its unique mix of waffle and music from independent and Creative Commons artists. The husband and wife team of Dave and Caroline present this weekly show from their home studio in the heart of South Yorkshire.

The show is recorded on Friday nights and streamed live via their chatroom allowing listeners to interact with them as the show is being recorded. The recording is then released as a podcast a few hours later so that even those who couldn’t join them for the live recording can enjoy the show in its full, unedited, glory.”

Streams

To have somebody both play music for you but also provide a deeper connection to their work. It’s something many more people used to get from the radio that we seem to have lost with algorithmic recommendations.

And today, this should be easier than ever. Anybody can now produce a live stream and/or podcast to highlight music they love to the world. You don’t need to be a professional DJ on a broadcast station. But to play their work online legally, you need to have the permission of the artist. It can be hard to get that directly from the musician, or if they do give it to you, the person who heard it and wants to do the same now has to ask them again. That’s one of the best features of Creative Commons. It’s a license to share.

Below are a mix of the best human curated music mixes going today. Pure podcasts. 24/7 shuffled online streams. Classic radio shows done regularly. Most are a mix of formats. Please check them out.

The OO Top 10 Show

Ryno has been doing his weekly show for over a decade. He’s live for about an hour on Friday nights at 6pm US Central with a chat room. That gets released shortly afterward as a podcast. He also runs a 24/7 stream.

Radio Brennpunkt

RADIO BRENNPUNKT is an experimental Internet streaming radio station playing a mix of unusual music, sound art, live shows, and other fringe programming. Some shows are live, some are pre-programmed, but all are curated. A range of sounds but lots of experimental ambient sounds.
